Vegan Butter – Everything You Need to Know
Let’s face it, butter can make pretty much any food tasty and enjoyable. Not only is butter fantastic when spread on toast, it’s also an essential ingredient when used in baking and various other sweet and savoury dishes as well.
The only downside to regular butter made from dairy sources is the fact that it is unsuitable for vegans and plant-based dieters. Because butter is such an important ingredient however, the good news is that there are numerous plant-based vegan butter options out there, which not only taste great, but which are also very versatile as well.
If you are following a vegan diet and are looking to learn more about vegan butter, you’ve come to the right place. Here’s a look at everything you need to know about vegan butter.
What is vegan butter made from?
Vegan butter is a plant-based alternative to dairy butter, though obviously as it’s vegan it is dairy-free.
Whereas regular dairy butter is made primarily from the milk of cows, as well as sometimes sheep, and even goats, vegan butter is made from plant-based milks, providing a smooth, creamy, and rich finish with a texture that is very close to dairy butter.
There are plenty of vegan butter recipes out there, all using different ingredients suitable for vegans. With that said however, typically you’ll find that vegan butter is made from ingredients such as:
- Almond flour for emulsification of the fats, and for the buttery taste and flavour
- Salt for flavour (remember, butter is often salted)
- Plant-based milk for emulsification and a creamy texture
- Apple cider vinegar for the acidic content to help balance flavours and preserve the butter
- Refined coconut oil to ensure that the butter sets and solidifies (must be refined for a neutral flavour)
- Canola oil, avocado oil, or olive oil to give the butter its texture and make it spreadable
- Optional pinch of turmeric to give the butter a yellow colour to make it look more authentic
How is vegan butter made?
Making vegan butter is very simple. All ingredients other than the oils are added to a food processor and blended until they form a smooth paste.
Next, the oils are added to the mixture, and everything is then blended again until a light, airy, and creamy texture is obtained.
The mixture is then removed from the processor and added to a sterile lidded container and is placed into the fridge to set. Once set, it can then be used just like dairy butter.
