Plant Based Milk
With so many people now following vegan diets and lifestyles as part of their everyday lives, we’re seeing more vegan-friendly food and drink options on menus than ever before.
Vegan diets and lifestyles do not allow the consumption of produce which contains animal-derived ingredients, or which has been obtained due to the exploitation of animals or any other living beings for that matter. That means dairy milk is off the menu for vegans.
Milk is a great source of calcium, and it also brings a cup of tea or coffee to life, and is of course integral for an early morning bowl of cereal, so does that mean that vegans must do without? Thankfully, no, because there are numerous plant-based “milk” sources out there that are just as good, if not better, than real milk, that are perfectly acceptable on a vegan diet.
Here’s a look at 4 of the best vegan milk sources currently available today.
Oat milk
Oat milk is, without question, one of the most popular vegan milk products currently on the market today, and for good reason too.
Oat milk is made by soaking whole oats in water before blending very finely until a smooth and rich consistency similar to reduced fat milk is achieved.
The milk itself has a distinct oat-like taste (who would have guessed?) with a hint of sweetness and has a good consistency. It is also very beneficial to health as it is rich in dietary fibre, along with B vitamins and minerals such as iron, zinc, and potassium.
Many vegan oat milks are even fortified with additional vitamins and minerals for even further health benefits.
Coconut milk
Perhaps the most popular vegan milk product outside of the vegan community is coconut milk.
Coconut milk is fantastic for vegans as it can be used as a milk substitute, plus it can also be used for cooking in a whole variety of sweet and savoury plant-based dishes.
Vegan coconut milk is made by soaking grated coconut in warm water before blending and filtering until a smooth milk-like liquid is obtained. It has a distinctly sweet and coconutty taste and is also packed full of heart-healthy fats in the form of MCTs (medium chain triglycerides).
Almond milk
If you want the most popular milk substitute in the vegan community, most would probably agree that almond milk is the number one, or if not, it’s certainly a contender.
Almond milk is made in a similar way to oat milk, in that peeled almonds are soaked in hot water until soft, before being blended and processed with water to achieve a smooth, rich, creamy liquid that works incredibly well as a milk substitute.
Almond milk is very tasty and has a nutty taste that works really well with tea or coffee. The milk is also loaded full of antioxidants such as vitamin E, and minerals including zinc, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and iron.
If the nutty taste is too much, there is a sweetened version, or you can also combine it with maple syrup perhaps?
Cashew milk
Finally, we have cashew milk.
Cashew milk is made from cashew nuts and is made by soaking peeled raw cashew nuts in hot water until they turn soft, and then processing and blending, before filtering them until a smooth liquid has been obtained.
Cashew milk has a more subtle nutty taste than almond milk, and is smoother, richer, and creamier. It too is a great source of vitamin E and is also lower in calories than almond milk as well.
